Let's all talk about "The Thing" (S13 E17) HERE!

Sam and Dean continue their odd grocery shopping trip to find ingredients for the spell to open the portal. We get to see another MOL bunker in this one which might be cool. Then there's the Gabriel/Asmodeus/Ketch storyline that's part of this one too. Less excited about that. Ketch...just...why is he still here? Also, I thought Gabriel's death was a good one and I'm not thrilled about his reappearance. SPN sometimes (for me) cheapens the death of great main characters by bringing them back. But let's see how it goes! Do you find this valuable?

I am EXCITED for this one! I do want to see what happens with Mr. Ketch and Asmodeus. Ketch isn't one to take being pushed around too much, and in the trailer for this episode it looks like he gets a beat down and some verbal abuse from Asmodeus, which will drive him STRAIGHT to the Winchesters -- and all JUST in time for him to spill the beans to them about Gabriel.

Meanwhile, Luci in charge of heaven with Sister Jo by his side?? THAT happy little partnership can't last long, either. I'm ready to see both of them brought low.

I think the season 13 soup has been simmering for a while now and will start boiling over with this episode and I can't wait!

Hi Guys,

I just can't wait to see Gabriel again! I hope he has a lot of airtime. It may be hard with all the subplots going at once. I also hope that the explanation for his return is believable.

WELLLL, Kate....Ketch certainly made himself worth some of the trouble he caused before and even "one-upped" your prediction by bringing Gabriel, his grace and the blade along when running to the Winchesters for protection! How'd a thunk it??

Overall a very good episode to me! Main story arc moving along. Lots of action. Interesting new Mol "allies" (?!). Very enjoyable to watch.

There were a few "too convenient" moments for me - such as Asmodeus disappearing and not leaving a guard behind, when Ketch decides to rescue Gabriel and steel the Archangel blade!!! - but I choose to overlook them for the sake of the story moving along.

I would have liked to see a bit more of the brother moment and discussion before Sam lets Dean mosy on off into Apocalypse World, though. That was a bit too easy for me.

I also hope we find out more about the other two MOLs in future episodes!! And did I miss it or did they completely forget to explain why the Aquarian Star in the Portsmouth chapter house had the eye in the middle of it???

I did like the monster god story and found it funny that they chose to give it tentacles, considering some past references to Dean's adult entertainment choices- hehe

Hi Sable,

I am not sure yet, if I like him being back or not....I guess for me it will depend on if he will turn out to be more important and useful to the story than just being a "grace donor".

I hope Gabriel does regain his previous attitude and antics....because right now he's not very fun to watch....

WOW!!! What a great episode!

Ok, I’m just gonna get this out of the way – where the hell is Castiel?!?!? He was there for ScoobyDoo, but MIA for this??? I saw the previews for next week, so I guess we’ll see him then, but dang – he should’ve been the one to go with Dean. Okay, okay – I guess Ketch is going to need a redemption story, and he does have some feelings for Mary, so maybe it’s not such a terrible thing that he’s the one who went with Dean.

I personally like Ketch and I LOVE what David Haydn-Jones does with this character, so I’m thrilled to see so much focus on him being in the main story again. I do fear for his life, though. He’s clearly on a redemption story arc (he quit working for Asmodeus, joined the good guys by freeing Gabriel, and is now side-by-side with Dean), so that probably means he’s gonna die. And since he hasn’t caught up with Rowena to get his immortality sigil refueled, this time might be for good. I hope not – I really like his character.

Interesting detail about Asmodeus, treating his use of angel grace like they treated Crowley’s blood addiction. At least that sort of explains where Asmodeus got all his extra powers. Lucifer did say that he didn’t give him all the powers he has, so he must’ve been stealing Gabriel’s angel grace for a while in order to have all those additional powers.

I’m hoping for a good explanation for why Gabriel is still alive.

My only negative comment is that the boys should’ve been smart enough to know that Sandy wasn’t human. I know they said they tested her with holy water, salt, etc. but they MUST have suspected something, right? I guess their first instinct was to get her out of harm’s way and sort things out later. But that didn’t make them look very smart at the end.

I liked the twist toward the end – I thought Sam was gonna get knocked out, kidnapped, and end up being the one in trouble. But they flipped the script on that one. I didn’t see that coming right away. Of course, I didn’t trust Sandy, but I didn’t know how things were gonna work out until they talked about “breeding” – Dean was right about creepy tentacle porn :).

Speaking of Dean and Sam, I loved seeing them BOTH in brother-protection mode. When Dean thought Sam had been kidnapped, he was ready to take on the world to get him back. And then we got to see Sam rush to Dean’s rescue just in time. I love seeing their devotion to each other. That NEVER gets old to me.

Just curious – where did the MOLs get archangel grace back in 1925 to open the portal and invite the tentacle babe here?

And how are you “guarding” a god from another world when you’re not even in the bunker to guard her? How did they expect to know she was free unless they happened to run into her at the diner? That part left me scratching my head a little bit.

Other tidbits –

The bit with the Post-it notes was adorable! I love a good chuckle! And the banter between Dean and Sam is always fun – Sam’s kale and Dean’s cholesterol – LOL! Golden!

I like that they periodically show us parts of the bunker that we haven’t seen before – like the archive room. It creates the feeling that the bunker is full of hidden rooms and other treasures they still have to tell us about when they’re ready.

The fight scenes are getting more interesting. They’re lasting longer and the choreography is cool. One of those knife moves was lame, though – if you slow it down, Dean’s leg would’ve gotten cut. I can’t take credit for catching that – hubby caught that one.

I loved seeing Ketch stand up to Asmodeus. He paid for it dearly, but it was awesome to see.

I liked this one! Looking forward to next week!

I agree, Sable!
We didn't get too much from Gabriel tonight, but I think next week will be different. It looks like Cas is back, so he and Sam will have some alone-time with Gabriel to get his story.

Hi Y'All,
as I said, I really enjoyed this one, although there were a few "huh?" moments for me in it as well.

I thought the beginning, when Dean pinned little childish notes on Sam's back was hilarious and Jensen did AWESOME as ever with his comedic performance, which was mostly little facial expressions!!! Very cute.

I could have done with slightly less Asmodeus....he is starting to annoy me a little...OR more insight into why he is injecting grace into himself.
Shouldn't that HURT him? He is a Prince of Hell and was created by Lucifer after all....why would arc angel grace give him a boost??

I did like that Ketch somewhat redeemed himself - at least slightly - with his actions this week. Yeah, I know, he is still mostly looking out for himself, but at least this time it actually helps the Winchesters. I sure hope he'll keep going in the right direction when he's with Dean in AU.....maybe even giving his life for Mary???? THAT would be a fitting end for Ketch's character, wouldn't it?

I was surprised that the episode made such leap forward and immediately connected the MOW story to the arc by having them open the rift and jump right in! But I am not complaining as we've been waiting long enough for an exciting episode now.

I do understand Dean's eagerness to move it along and get mom and Jack back, however, I wish he would have slowed down just a little and maybe consider taking Cas along instead of Ketch...or both...or leave Cas behind as guard for Gabriel and take Sam along... I just don't like the idea of him being over in AU world by himself with only Ketch as a "questionable" ally.

One thing that was confusing to me: Am I to understand that the whole town (police) was supporting the MOL in their effort to bind the God to the chapter house? Otherwise, why were all the red robed figures there?

TOTALLY agree with you, kate!!

LOVE the fact that the Boys are totally on the same page with protecting each other.

However, that also means that there is a bit of a slide back to old days with Dean simply deciding that he will be the one to go and "that's the way it's gonna be"....and I don't really like that!! I understand it, but don't like it!

Good point on the source of the grace in 1925!! Pretty convenient....

And the missing protection of dangerous "items" was a theme, I guess, as Asmodeus did the same with Gabriel and the arc angel blade....

Yes, there were some issues with this one, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

Hi Kate,
in my mind Cas was probably looking for a way to get arc angel grace or collect another missing ingredient...so I wasn't really surprised that he was MIA.

I also wasn't really bothered by the fact that the boys jumped into action to save the damsel in distress, but I agree with you that they should have at least run the basic tests on her. And it would have helped with the reasoning on why they got her so quickly out of there, if there would have been some type of urgency - maybe an Indiana Jones like counter measure situation or some such - to make them run for it.

GOOD POINT on Asmodeus' abilities and that they might be caused by the grace injections! I didn't think of that. Makes good sense.

In the boys' defense, they said (when they were talking at the diner) that they tested her with silver, holy water, etc and nothing happened. So they did run the basic tests.

I guess they didn't know what else to do with her except to get her out of that bunker and then figure out the rest later. It just made them seem careless,. But you're probably right -- their first instinct was to protect her so it's sort of in line with how they operate.

Hey, PNP :)

Ketch dying like that would make me sad, but I suspect you're right. It would be a fitting end to his redemption story, and I don't think he's gonna get out of this alive this time.

I was also VERY happy to see the main stories lurch forward so far this week. I'm glad they didn't wait until the season finale to open the rift!

Good question about the robed figures. I guess the MOLs decided to embed several agents in the town? The cook at the diner and at least one cop were MOLs (by inheritance/blood, of course), so I guess they hide in plain sight in that town so there's always someone to keep an eye on the monster? Good question, though...

Hey Guys,

I love your comments...Kate I had to smile when you wrote...you fear for Ketch's life because he is clearly in a redemption storyline. They always kill off the boys' allies after some time maybe he will last another season. PNP, when you wrote that Dean was sliding back to old ways with Dean simply deciding that he will be the one to go and "that's the way it's gonna, be"... the look that Sam gave him spoke so many silent words to Dean. (I always love their silent communications.)
I think Davey Perez did an excellent job of writing. When you have to push the storyline forward and still have time for those moments between the boys we love and do it in approximately 40 mins I must say that seems is hard.
Now Asmodeus taking in any kind of grace seems contradictory to me. Angels use their grace to smote demons...so how can he inject that very thing in any Demons? (I know that the power of intent is behind the smiting but I just think they should be allergic!) Yes, Lucifer created them...but if Cain was the first human soul turned...What were Lilith and Abbadon again? Were the princes created from scratch or did he use the souls Chuck created?
As far as the Boys' helping "the monster"... that is what they do and when they find they made an error they just keep going (it really is an important message we need to hear in our lives about making mistakes) so props to the writer again.
Now I surmise that the new MOLs that we met are in every walk of life in that city...a couple of generations have come and gone since the 1920's. Now the job of the young ones is to keep the monster on lockdown. I don't think they ever thought there would be another key to their bunker out there and that a MOL would free it.
We were told that Abbadon killed off the MOLs only to learn it was just the American branch. Now a specialized branch! What next?

I agree 100% Sable! Although this episode was FULL of important plot points, it never felt rushed to me. I figured the Boys would get the third ingredient they need, and they'd get a lead (from Ketch) about how to get their hands on Gabriel, but I NEVER imagined that they'd get all the ingredients they need AND Ketch and Dean would end up on the other side in the AU.

I credit the writers, director, and actors for creating just the right tempo.

One big question for me -- I hope Ketch and Dean have the archangel blade with them, because how else are they gonna deal with Michael if they get close enough to do anything to him?

I'm still guessing that Michael will inhabit Dean somehow in the AU.

Okay, this one was not bad. I think DHJ does a great job playing sleazy Ketch...my problem is that he's still alive at all. Bringing him back involved such twisted logic, I'm annoyed that he's alive every time I see him. BUT, if I could forget he was shot in the forehead, I'd think he's doing a good job right now.

I will say it moved along and was surprised Dean went through the rift already! Seems he'll be there for awhile (or back again later?) because Jim Beaver Tweeted about filming with Jensen THIS WEEK.

I am irritated by the "gods from other universes" thing because I think there's plenty to explore in earth-bound mythology.

My favorite brother moment was in the diner when Sam revealed he's watching his cholesterol. Loved that. Perez is good at the brother moments. Not as good as Robbie Thompson, but Perez may be the best we've got for that right now.

Perez did tweet that Dean's "that's how it's gonna be" ( him going into the AU without Sam) was very "John sounding" on purpose. It did sound like John.

Asmodeus. Yawn.

Gabriel. Also shouldn't be alive but I'm curious to hear him talk now and hope Sam and Cas can figure out where he's been.

Yes, weird that Cas was missing without explanation.

The tentacles were kinda funny.

There WERE lots of iffy holes in this one that you've all already pointed out.

I love that DEAN found the location of the ingredient they were looking for. He was so proud of finding it!

How do they know that opening the rift will take them where they want to go and not into the arms of tentacle God?

Another thing I noticed on re-watch today: Asmodeus has three vials with Gabriel grace in the box, when we last see him inject himself, but Ketch only turns over ONE vial to the boys at the end of the ep.....I am assuming he kept the other two and maybe took it with him to AU world?? Could come in handy....for the way back??

Hey, JBB :)

The MOL guy from Rhode Island told them that in order to go to the right place, they have to include something that's been there before when they do the spell. Dean plucked some of his hair and added it to the spell ingredients to make sure they (hopefully) end up in the right place.
