• A device called a "with catcher" actually existed, but it was a weapon (a point and a hook) on the end of a long pole; it was intended to keep a witch at a distance and prevent the witch from being able to touch another person.
• "Oedipal" refers to a psychological concept called the Oedipus complex, used to describe an attraction between a man (or boy) and his mother. The concept is derived from the actions of a mythical Greek king (Oedipus) who killed his father so he could marry his mother.
