  • Sam to Dean (when they learn that they and the Impala are trapped inside a cartoon) - "It's beyond weird."
Dean to Sam - "Well, 'and beyond weird' is kind of our thing, so whatever happened, we'll figure it out."
  • Sam to Dean (about the Scooby Gang after they dismissively walk away from a dead body) - "So, do they always walk away from dead bodies, or...?"
  • Castiel to Shaggy and Scooby - "Wonderful. I once led armies and now I'm paired with a scruffy Philistine and a talking dog."
  • Castiel to the ghost - "I've never seen a ghost wear such a ridiculous costume."
  • Castiel saying goodbye to Shaggy and Scooby - "I will miss your wise words and your gentle spirits. Thank you. You've shown me the great strength of laughter in the face of danger."

  • Castiel was able to find fruit from the tree of life, so will the Winchesters be able to find the final two ingredients for the spell?
  • How did the Impala get into Scooby Doo world?
  • Is the Mystery Machine really faster than the Impala?

  • One of Dean's (rare) fond childhood memories is watching Scooby Doo. The normalcy of watching the cartoon helped Dean cope when John left him and Sam alone in motels with little else to do. Although Sam was reluctant to admit it, he also enjoyed watching Scooby Doo as a child.
  • Dean considers the Scooby Gang his childhood role models because they fight evil just like Dean's family did.
  • Castiel was able to find fruit from the tree of life, which is in Syria. According to Castiel, the tree is guarded by a pack of djinn. The angel had to kill some of the djinn, and bargain with the others. He may have agreed to marry a djinn queen in order to get the fruit from the tree.

  • Dean apparently likes foosball. He made sure there was a foosball table in his Dean-cave. He also played foosball when he was hanging out with Crowley in "Black" (season 10) and when he refused to leave Sam in "Croatoan" (season 2) he wished aloud that there was a foosball table in the room to help pass the time.
  • Dean reminds Sam that the last time they were sucked into a television show, they got out by playing their parts, referring to "Changing Channels" (season 5) when the archangel Gabriel (masquerading as the Trickster) transported them into various television shows to try to force them to "play their parts" by saying yes to being vessels for Michael and Lucifer.
  • The pawn store featured in this episode was also used in season 7 "The Mentalists". These screenshots are from "The Mentalist". You can see the address number "809" next to the door, the neon sign displaying the hours, and the metal bars on the glass:

  • The Scooby Doo episodes Dean mentions, like "A Night of Fright is No Delight" and the Scooby Doo villains he lists, like the Miner 49er and the Space Kook are real references to the Scooby Doo cartoon.
  • As the gang is running from the ghost, we see a cameo appearance by Scrappy Doo (Scooby's nephew) who was not in this episode, but appeared initially in the animated series in 1979 and was a recurring character. Scrappy is a smaller dog than Scooby and can be seen running right-to-left through the second set of doors:

  • The original animated series "Scooby Doo, Where Are You" ran from 1969 to 1970. Since then, there have been spinoffs and full feature animated films based on these original characters
  • Dean jokes about the stuffed dinosaur that attacked him and Sam, calling the monster “Barney”; this refers to the main character from the children’s television show "Barney and Friends" (1992 – 2009) who was a large, purple, dinosaur
  • A “plushy” may refer to someone's fetish for stuffed animals
  • Dean jokes about “Elsa”, referring to Princess Elsa from the 2013 Disney animated film “Frozen”
  • Dean jokes about Scooby, calling him “Marmaduke”. Marmaduke is the main character from the long-running (1954 – present) newspaper comic strip of the same name. Marmaduke and Scooby Doo are both Great Danes
  • Dean jokingly refers to the Mystery Machine as a “Micro Van”; a micro van is a very small minivan manufactured in Japan
  • Castiel refers to Shaggy as a Philistine. The Philistines were a civilization mentioned in the Old Testament of the bible as one of the groups that battled with the Israelites. In modern-day jargon, “Philistine” is a derogatory term for an uneducated, uncivilized person
  • Dean is correct. Al Capone was an infamous prohibition-era mafia kingpin who went to prison for tax evasion.

  • "Sunrise" ("einleitung") from "also sprach Zarathustra"-- by Richard Strauss (Dean hums the tune when he uses the remote control)
  • "Scooby Dooby Doo" -- by Larry Marks (plays during the montage as the Scooby Gang, The Winchesters, and Castiel are being chased by the ghost)
