Byzantium
Episode 8 Season 14
airdate: December 6, 2018
directed by Eduardo Sanchez
written by Meredith Glynn

Jack's body gives out and Jack dies in his bed in the bunker with Sam next to him and Cas and Dean out in the hall. All are devastated. They drink themselves into oblivion while reminiscing about Jack. Sometime during that time, Sam thinks of a way they hadn't come up with yet to bring back Jack; using the angel tablet. He enlists the help of angel expert (and angel assassin) and someone well-versed in magic, Lily Sunder. Lily has her own problems but agrees to help the Winchesters get Jack back with a plan that involves using a piece of Jack's own soul and some magic (via Lily). Cas takes a trip to heaven to find Jack who is getting to know his mom Kelly better. Heaven is being ripped apart by the creature from The Empty who is out to find Jack who, because he is half angel, belongs in The Empty and not in heaven. Cas confronts The Empty (in the body of angel Duma) and promises to trade his life for Jack's if The Empty will allow Jack to go back to earth. The Empty agrees, but doesn't want Cas immediately. It says it will wait until Cas is happy and then it will take him at that moment. Cas agrees and makes Jack promise not to tell Sam and Dean about the plan. Jack promises. Jack is then sent back to his body with the help of Lily's spell...bringing Jack back but costing Lily her life in the process. Lily then faces Anubis for final judgment and finds out if she'll spend eternity in heaven or hell. Before Cas leaves heaven, Naomi wants to thank him for saving the angels and heaven from The Empty with his deal and gives him Archangel Michael's location. At the end of this episode, Jack is back in the bunker with Sam and Dean and Cas and they're formulating a plan to find Dark Kaia and her spear to use against Michael.

  • How can Sam, Dean, and Cas laugh while telling stories about Jack when he JUST died?
  • Just why was Osiris "passed over" as the judge of who is going to heaven and hell in favor of his son Anubis after "God disappeared"?
  • Why does Sam appear to not even have a hangover after a night of very heavy drinking after Jack's death?
  • Is Jack's version of heaven learning out on the road with Sam and Dean (the first place he goes when he dies)?
  • What was happening to Naomi when she was staring to be overcome by black goo from The Empty before telling Cas and Jack to run?
  • If heaven is destroyed by The Empty and "millions of human souls" are "thrown to the wind", what does that mean? Where do they go?
  • How happy does Cas have to be for The Empty to consider him happy enough to reap? What will be Cas' point of ultimate happiness and, therefore, the moment that will make him the most sad to be taken by The Empty?
  • How did Sam find Lily Sunder so quickly?
  • Why was Sam's big idea to bring Jack back with angel tablet, yet Lily, who is not a prophet, could not read it? Why didn't Sam just contact Lily to ask if she had some magical way to bring Jack back? Why involve the angel tablet at all?
  • Why doesn't Dean question Cas' intel about Michael's location in more detail?

  • Lily Sunder has allowed herself to age and wants to die.
  • Jack sees the unknown and his own death as an adventure.
  • When The Empty possesses an angel, it does not kill the angel when it leaves.
  • Kelly Kline does not blame Cas for Jack's death or the way his life has gone.
  • The Empty cares most about killing Cas, the angel who "woke him up"; more than it cares about reaping Jack.
  • Sam blurts out to Lily that Jack is "our kid". Dean feels the same when he guilts Lily into helping them, saying she has no soul left if she wants them to go through what she went through (losing a child).
  • Cas loves Jack and tells him so. He also confirms that Sam and Dean love Jack.
  • If heaven is destroyed, millions of human souls will be thrown "to the wind".
  • whether a person gets in to heaven or hell depends on every action of their lives right up to the very end; it's never too late to turn something around.
  • Dean does not trust Lily Sunder.
  • Dean is suspicious of allowing Lily to use part of Jack's soul to bring him back to life.
  • Cas is ready to willingly give his life for Jack's.
  • ean seemed most willing to let Jack stay dead because messing with the natural order has almost always backfired on them.
  • Even beings that Sam and Dean have never met, like Anubis, know who they are because their paperwork has come across his desk as Sam and Dean have died several times over the years.
  • Dean, in times of pain, really wants to hear his mom's voice and lean on her a bit.
  • Sam deals with his pain by taking it out physically on a grove of trees, breaking an axe in the process under the guise of getting wood for a funeral pyre for Jack.
  • Naomi is still around and still in charge up in heaven.
  • Each soul in heaven has a room with a door with the years of their life on it; inside the room, they relive their best moments of their lives over and over.
  • he Empty (at least in heaven) is a very powerful being who cannot be effectively attacked by angels or dead nephilim.
  • Kelly will be waiting for Jack when he dies (again) someday.
  • Naomi knows where Michael is.
  • The Empty has the ability to open all of heaven's doors; even those that were closed by Metatron.
  • Egyptian gods can be bound in a circle of palm oil.

  • Actresses Courtney Ford (Kelly Kline) and Amanda Tapping's (Naomi) names did not appear in credits until the end of the episode to keep their appearances a surprise.
  • This episode is the first time Jack and his mother Kelly have met.
  • We learn that Death, Reapers, and even God have no say in where a person's soul goes after death; it is determined by all the choices that person made in life.
  • Naomi says that 46 billion, 750 million souls populate heaven.

  • The title, according to writer Meredith Glynn, revers to a poem by William Butler Yeats.
  • In this episode, there are references to Osiris who Dean met in an earlier episode when Osiris based your place after death on how much guilt you carried, not your deeds in life.
